Vienna Youth Inc. (VYI) Cheerleading is a fall/winter recreational...

Each year VYI Cheer participates in fundraising and awareness efforts for worthy charitable causes.  This season, VYI Cheer is proud to again be supporting Team Sabrina (www.teamsabrina.com) in its efforts to raise awareness and funds for research, treatment and support for children who have been affected by childhood cancer.

Sabrina is a sweet and spirited five-year old, the beloved little sister of one of our VYI Football players and two VYI alums.  She is also cheering for the first time this year with our kindergarten squad.  If you saw Sabrina on the sidelines at Waters Field, you probably wouldn't guess that she was diagnosed with neuroblastoma, an aggressive form of pediatric cancer, when she was just sixteen months old.  Her diagnosis came completely out of the blue because she seemed perfectly healthy and had no symptoms of illness.  She underwent chemotherapy, several surgeries including a nine-hour tumor resection at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York, and countless scans, tests, injections, needles, port accesses, and other procedures. In January 2014, twenty months after her diagnosis, her doctors determined she had no detectable cancer. She continues to be monitored with scans and other tests but she has been able to remain off treatment and is a happy, healthy preschooler.

Friends and neighbors in our local community rallied around Sabrina and her family during her diagnosis, treatment, and recovery.  "Team Sabrina" began as a shorthand for this incredible support network.  It has evolved into an effort by Sabrina's family and friends to support other families on similar journeys with their children - through spreading awareness, fundraising for research, and providing direct support for local families in need.  Team Sabrina works with local organizations that provide assistance to pediatric cancer families in the form of gift cards and donations of blankets and toys to the pediatric oncology floor at Inova Fairfax Hospital and the Children's National Medical Center oncology clinic in Falls Church, where Sabrina received her treatment.

On October 16, Team Sabrina will be walking in the 2016 Northern Virginia CureSearch Walk (http://www.curesearchevents.org/site/TR?fr_id=1271&pg=entry) in Tysons Corner.  CureSearch for Children's Cancer is a national non-profit foundation that accelerates the cure for children's cancer by driving innovation, eliminating research barriers and solving the field's most challenging problems. CureSearch is dedicated to ensuring treatment is possible and a cure probable for the 42 children diagnosed with cancer daily. The Northern Virginia CureSearch Walk celebrates and honors children from the Northern Virginia area whose lives have been affected by childhood cancer, while raising funds for CureSearch's vital research. Team Sabrina has participated in the CureSearch Walk for the past three years and has raised over $40,000.

To increase the VYI Community’s awareness of this important cause, and to help Team Sabrina meet its goal for this year's CureSearch Walk, VYI Cheer will be collecting cash/change donations at the Waters Field Snack Bar during the September 17 and September 24 games.  All funds raised will be given directly to Team Sabrina to donate to the 2016 Northern Virginia CureSearch Walk or other local organizations supported by Team Sabrina. VYI Cheer appreciates your enthusiastic support and participation. Please stop by the Snack Bar and look for the brown VYI Cheer - Team Sabrina donation boxes.   If you have any questions, please contact  .

About VYI Cheer

Vienna Youth Inc. (VYI) Cheerleading is a fall/winter recreational cheer program for those wanting to gain basic to intermediate cheerleading skills. For VYI, it is not only our goal to have a program that supports Vienna Youth Football, but also a program for our more committed athletes to develop the skills necessary to go onto the next level. Cheerleading is no longer just considered crowd entertainment, but rather has evolved into a very competitive sport at all levels. We provide a program that will develop the cheer, dance and gymnastic skills necessary to succeed at the high school level and allow the participants to have a good time in the process.

Cheerleaders are grouped by age and ability. With VYI, you will develop your motion techniques, learn basic stunting, improve your jumps and learn a few fun sideline and dance routines.

Registrations for the Fall season will be available on-line beginning in May with practices begining in August.

VYI cheerleading is open to cheerleaders entering Kindergarten in the Fall thru 9th grade.
