Special House League Rules
Jewelry
No one in our league is allowed to wear earrings or other jewelry, which in the opinion of the game referee might cause injury to another player. Players may not satisfy this rule by covering the jewelry with tape, so pierced earrings, for example, must be removed prior to a game.
Ejection
IF A PLAYER, PARENT OR COACH IS EJECTED FROM A GAME BY A REFEREE THEY ARE AUTOMATICALLY SUSPENDED FOR AT LEAST ONE (1) WEEK INCLUDING PARTICIPATING IN OR ATTENDING THE NEXT SCHEDULED GAME AND NEXT SCHEDULED PRACTICE (COMMISSIONER RESERVE THE RIGHT TO ALLOW AND/OR REQUIRE A SUSPENDED PLAYER TO ATTEND THE NEXT SCHEDULED GAME TO WATCH WITHOUT PARTICIPATING). AT DISCRETION OF THE GRADE LEVEL/LEAGUE COMMISSIONER, AN EJECTION FROM A GAME MAY RESULT IN SUSPENSION FOR MORE THAN ONE (1) WEEK AND/OR PERMANENT DISMASSAL FROM THE LEAGUE FOR COACH, PLAYER OR PARENT. ANY COACH OR PARENT WHO APPROACHES A REFEREE IN ANGER AT ANY TIME, OR TO QUESTION HOW A GAME WAS CALLED, IS SUBJECT TO BEING REPORTED TO THE LEAGUE AND MAY BE SUSPENDED DEPENDING UPON THE SEVERITY OF THE SITUATION. IF EJECTED OR SUSPENDED A SECOND TIME IN ONE SEASON, THAT PERSON WILL BE AUTOMATICALLY DISMISSED FOR THE REMAINDER OF THE SEASON AND MAY NOT PARTICIPATE IN PRACTICES OR GAMES FOR ANY VYI BASKETBALL TEAM.
ANY PLAYER, PARENT, SPECTATOR, OR COACH WHO MAKES PHYSICAL CONTACT WITH A REFEREE IS SUBJECT TO IMMEDIATE EJECTION FROM THE GYM AND POTENTIAL EXPULSION FROM VYI.
Participation on Two Teams
No player is allowed to play on two VYI basketball teams in two leagues at the same time in the same season. For example, a player properly registered in the VYI 4th grade league may not play on a VYI team in the 5th grade league. A player not properly registered may not play in any game or participate in practice. Anyone participating in, or allowing, such improper conduct will be suspended from the league. A player who is on a county team may not play in a house league game.
No coach may play a player who is not properly assigned to the team. A "guest" player may not be brought in if the team is short of players.
Less than Five Players
Any team that has less than five players present at the scheduled start of a game will forfeit the game to the other team. Guest players may not be used and the referee will not participate. If a coach uses a “guest” player without notifiying the referees the team will receive a forfeit for the game.
Coaching
Coaches are expected to be generally knowledgeable about basketball or willing to learn, a good teacher, and an excellent role model (see coaches code of conduct). Coaches are expected to communicate actively with their team and parents.
Posting Scores
Winning coaches in grades 4 through high school are required to post scores of their games weekly using the WEB site and their Manager password. The league commissioner is responsible to ensure all scores are posted and to establish a penalty, such as declaring a tie, if scores are not posted on time.
Coach Application and Background Checks
All coaches are required to submit a House Coach Application every year that they participate. Anyone designated by the commissioner as a Head Coach or an Assistant Coach and subsequently appear in Team Contacts is required to complete a NCSI background check.
Building Director Schedules
All coaches, in coordination with their commissioner, must identify the volunteer positions of the families on their team and put together a Building Director Schedule for every practice and game prior to the first game of the season and submit the schedule via VYI's administrative website at admin.vyi.org . The coach, by helping manage the Building Directors appointed, must ensure the gym is left in better condition then when they arrived for both practices and games.
Coach Age Limitations
Current and past players at VYI are encouraged to return and volunteer their time to help the organization. All head coaches must be 18 years of age, or a high school senior, and there must be at least five years difference in age between themselves and the players they are coaching. Therefore, the highest grade an 18 year old may coach in is the 7th grade. High school seniors who want to coach should contact the VYI Basketball Commissioner. Assistant Coaches, as young as 16, may participate as long as there is an adult, 18 years old or older, named as the Head Coach of their team who completes a House Coach Application, takes the Building Director test and has a valid background Investigation, and the younger high school student acts as an Assistant Coach and completes the Building Director test and fills out an Under 18 Coach Application.
Overtime
Overtimes are not played during the regular house season. During playoffs, two full overtime period of 3 minutes will be played with clock stoppage as in a normal game, even if the game runs over into the start time for the next game. Third and succeeding overtimes required will be one minute each until a winner is decided. Each team can carry over one time out from regulation play and will receive one full timeout in the initial two overtime periods, but none in subsequent overtime periods. Referees will do their best to catch up on game time by limiting time between periods of subsequent games to 1 minute, time at the half to 2 minutes and warm-up times for games to 5 minutes. Players who foul out during regulation play are ineligible to play in the overtime period(s).
Gym Specific Rules
In small gyms, such as all our elementary school gyms or any gyms where there is space behind the bench that is not arranged for spectator seating, referees are required to establish a "bench" area, which no parents or non-team members may occupy during games. This includes on either side or behind this area. First violation of this rule requires a warning to the coach, the second violation will result in a technical foul, and the third violation will result in ejection of the coach. Subsequent violations will result in forfeiture of the game by the offending team.
This rule is intended to restrict the bench area for players and coaches not to exceed one head coach and two assistant coaches per team.
