Practice Information

SPRING PRACTICE TIMES AND LOCATION

What is the difference between pre-season clinics and regular practice?

Pre-season clinics and pick-up games can start as early as November.  These events are intended to give our players an opportunity to have some fun and get some exercise in the rugby off-season.  They also serve as an introduction to rugby for prospective new players.

When does practice start for the season?
Practices start in December for older age groups.  All teams are practicing in February.  The specific practice start date can vary based on weather and number of registered players.

What days and times will we practice?
Practices are usually held twice per week.  Practice days are subject to change within the season and from year depending on field availability.

Where will we practice?
Practice locations vary season to season.  Our practice fields are assigned by the county.  Common practice locations are; James Madison HS, Oakton HS, Marshal HS, Thoreau MS, and Kilmer MS.

WHAT TO BRING TO PRACTICE

What should players wear to practice?
(see the EQUIPMENT page)

What else should the player bring to practice?
Water, water, WATER!!! Or any sports drink.  Always be sure to drink plenty of water starting a couple hours before practice.  Bring at least two quarts of water to practice.  It will be hot, especially later in the season and players will need to drink plenty of water.

Do parents need to stay at practice?
No, but we need to know how to get in touch with you.  Practice may be called early because of a change in the weather.  Please keep an eye on the weather and return to the field if bad weather is approaching.  If we can't find you, we'll put your child in a car with a responsible adult who will wait at the field for you to arrive.

In the event of a medical emergency where a parent/guardian is not present a coach or athletic trainer will administer first aid and call an ambulance if needed.

It's always nice for parents to stay at practice and we encourage parents to lend a hand.

Will practice be held if it is raining?

Rugby is a tough sport.  We usually don't let a bit of rain get in the way any time of the year.  In the event of severe weather practice will be canceled.  Rugby VA follows the Fairfax county guidelines for severe weather and heat. If severe weather/heat is forecasted or develops, practice may be canceled. If there is lightning we will stop for 30 minutes. If we see lightning with less than 1 hour left before the end of practice, we will end practice for the day.  Advanced notice of cancelation will be provided whenever possible.
