What equipment/clothing does the player need for practice & games?

Uniform and Equipment

WHAT YOU NEED TO PLAY

Tag - Rubber molded or screw-in cleats, socks, athletic shorts, and t-shirt.

Tackle - Rubber molded or screw-in cleats, socks, "rugby shorts", and a rugby practice jersey.

  • Practice Jersey - A rugby practice jersey is a sturdy top that does not stretch much.  It does not need to be form fitting, but it should not be too loose.  A player can wear a sturdy shirt from home, but be aware that it might get torn.   A practice jersey can be purchased from any of the 'retail options' listed below.
  • Rugby Shorts - In order to effectively practice rugby, players must wear rugby shorts.  Rugby shorts are sturdy, thicker material, double stitching, and limited elasticity.  Vienna wears black rugby shorts for games.  Players are not required to have more than one pair of rugby shorts, but, an extra pair of shorts as a backup can be helpful.  Rugby shorts can be purchased from any of the 'retail options' listed below.
  • Cleats - Are required for games and practices.  Cleats can have molded plastic bottoms or have screw-in studs.  Cleats can not have a stud directly under the tip of the toe.  Cleats can not have metal spikes or blades like baseball or track.  Cleats in games and practice are partially a safety issue.  Players can easily slip and fall if not wearing cleats.  Cleats can be purchased from some of the retail options listed below or your preferred store.

What equipment/clothing does the player need for the game?
Rubber molded, or screw-in, cleats, socks (preferably Red, but Black or White are acceptable in a pinch), white rugby shorts, and a rugby jersey.  (VYI Rugby provides game jerseys to players on game day.  Jerseys are returned after each game.)

Does the player need a mouthpiece?
Every player needs a mouthpiece for practice and games.

Do rugby rules allow for any protective equipment other than a mouthpiece?
Protective equipment is not required, but the laws of rugby do permit certain kinds of equipment.  There are three kinds of protective equipment allowed - head pads, shoulders pads, Body pads.  Protective equipment in rugby is designed to protect against soft tissue damage such as cuts, scrapes and cauliflower ear,  All equipment must be foam padding with no hard metal or plastic parts.  Padding can be no more than 1 cm thick.

Touch rugby players do not need protective equipment, other than a mouth piece.  Protective equipment is optional in tackle rugby.  VYI recommends the use of protective, scrum-caps for certain playing positions.

Retail Options

Any soccer or general sporting goods store will be good for cleats and mouth guards.  Vienna Rugby has a team store for certain apparel, but it is a pop-up store.  Registered players are notified when the store is open.

World Rugby Shop (Online only)

*Picking a number for your practice jersey - You can pick any number your player likes if ordering a practice jersey.  Generally, 1 – 8 are considered ‘forwards’.  They are bigger and stronger, but usually less fast; generally similar to American football Offensive & Defensive linemen and ends.  9 & 10 are the scrum-half and fly-half, they are similar to American football center and QB.  11 – 15  are the ‘backs’, they are usually faster players who run in the open field more often.  Numbers 16 – 25 are substitution numbers.  Players are welcome to pick one of the standard numbers or any other number that they like. The number on a practice will not affect a players position assignment(s) in practices and games.
